How Do You Know If You Need an HVAC Compressor Replacement?

September 07, 2021

The compressor in your HVAC system generates cool air to keep your home comfortable when it’s hot outside. When this part of your AC system doesn’t work, your home can quickly heat up to uncomfortable temperatures. How do you know if you need an HVAC compressor replacement? Keep the following signs of compressor problems in mind.

Clogged or Dirty Air Filter

The air filter in your HVAC system helps keep the air in your home clean while cooling your home efficiently. When you have a dirty air filter, this slows airflow, which causes your compressor to run more slowly. When you have compressor problems, you should first check your air filter. If it’s been a month or more since you changed it, put in a new air filter and see if your compressor starts running at its normal speed.

Thermostat Problems

You might not necessarily have a compressor problem when cool air isn’t flowing out of your vents while your AC is running. Your thermostat could be causing this to happen. Check your thermostat to see if it’s not working right or if it needs new batteries. Putting in new batteries or having your thermostat repaired or replaced might solve your compressor problem and avoid the need for HVAC compressor replacement.

Blockages

The compressor in your HVAC system needs good airflow in order to work properly. If you have weeds, long grass, twigs, or other debris close to your outdoor unit, this can affect the compressor. You should always leave at least 2 feet of space around your outdoor unit on each side to make sure your compressor can function.

Unusual Sounds

Your compressor might begin to make loud sounds if it is damaged or worn. You should have HVAC technicians check the compressor to see if you really need HVAC compressor replacement. Keep in mind that compressors can last up to 20 years, especially with routine maintenance.
