Static Electricity

Chances are, you’re very familiar with pesky static electricity. This annoying phenomenon can cause a range of problems, most common of which being a zap to your skin that may startle you. Understanding what static electricity is can help you manage it and prevent those nasty zaps from occurring repeatedly.

In the winter, the air is usually cold and very, very dry. These conditions create the perfect environment for this static to accumulate, which is why more people have issues with it in the winter, not the sunshine months of the summer. So, what is static in the first place? Simply put, is the result of an electric charge building up on the surface of an object, which commonly happens when two surfaces rub together, like your feet on a fuzzy rug.

Eliminating the static can help make your life easier in the winter by lessening the unpleasant side effects of this particular kind of electricity. Though it may not seem like a big deal to you, static electricity can do more damage than just zapping your finger. Here are some possible effects of the static to look out for:

  • Zaps to the skin that feel like a minor electric shock.
  • Frizzy or otherwise disheveled hair.
  • Wrinkled or otherwise messy clothes for no apparent reason.
  • Problems with electronic equipment, like computers and TV’s.

Though these are all minor problems, they can be more than annoying. The good news is, that as a homeowner, there are many steps you can take to help clear up the problem. For example, installing a humidifier will add moisture to the air and reduce shocks. Even simmering a pot of water on the stove will help add moisture to the home.

When it comes to clothes, there are several solutions. Adding dryer sheets or wool dryer balls in with the clothes will help eliminate static, and wearing lotion will create a static electricity barrier.
