When you have small kids in the home, it is up to you to take the necessary precautions to keep them from harm. Of course, you must also protect your HVAC system from the curiosity of children.
To help you do both, we’ve compiled a few quick HVAC safety tips that you can put into practice right now.
Keep Thermostats Up High
Children love to fiddle with pretty much anything in your home and that definitely goes for electronic devices. This means there’s a good chance that the little ones will try to reach your thermostat if at all possible. Because of this, you’ll want to install it high enough to keep them away.
Secure Your Phone App
Kids these days are using phones and apps at a very young age. If you use a smart thermostat that is controlled by an app and a child gets hold of your phone, they could crank the temperature up or down all the way. Doing so can hurt your heating or cooling system.
Cover the Outdoor HVAC Unit
You may not realize how dangerous an outdoor HVAC unit can be. You can build a barrier, with sufficient space around the unit, around the perimeter that will keep children away. Or keep a close eye on children to ensure they stay away from these areas while outdoors.
Pay Attention to Your Vents
Vents are another dangerous thing in your household. Thanks to their curiosity, kids have a tendency to stick their fingers underneath the edges in an attempt to pull them up. Switching to plastic vents and/or securing the existing ones are the best way to keep them from harm.
