Boiler Maintenance Tips Every NJ Homeowner Should Know

If you want to keep your North Carolina home running smoothly, especially in the colder months that we have to look forward to, it’s important to maintain your boiler. We’d like to help you out, so here are some quick boiler maintenance tips that every homeowner should know:

  • Conduct an annual inspection — If you haven’t used your boiler since the last heating season, it’s important to begin with a quick inspection to make sure everything is still in good working order. You want to look for any cracks, leaks, or other damage. If you can’t see any damage, fire up the system and take note of its operation. Look for water leaks or escaping steam, depending on the type of boiler you have. A damaged boiler should never be used, so if you find anything amiss, don’t hesitate to call a professional technician.
  • Check the pressure gauge — Your boiler’s pressure gauge should be checked at the beginning of the heating season and then once a month while the system is in operation. Compare the reading on the gauge to what the manual says the pressure should be.
  • Keep the boiler unblocked — It’s important that items like furniture, paper, boxes, aerosol cans, gasoline, and everything else be kept away from the boiler while it’s in operation. Some of these items can melt while others represent a dangerous fire hazard. Plus, the boiler should be easily accessible in the event of an emergency.
  • Schedule a professional tune-up — It’s a good idea to hire a technician to service your boiler every year or two as a way to improve its efficiency and lengthen its operation life. The best time to do this is the off-season, when technicians aren’t as busy. But if you haven’t done it in a while, schedule an appointment right away before winter hits.
